Display issues with MacBook – should I replace it?

today when I tried to start my computer, the screen was just white for a while, and then a vertical pink bar appeared on the right side of the screen. I didn't know what to do so I pressed the "on" button on the top right of the keyboard, but when it restarted the same thing happened with the screen (white --> white with pink bar, and then a vertical purple bar appeared on the left). i closed the screen, and when i opened it, everything was normal and it prompted me to log in, and then everything worked.
Could this be foreshadowing a serious problem with my computer (i.e. will I lose all my files/do I need to buy a new one?)?

also I didn't mention that recently my computer was stolen (I got it back), but it probably got pretty banged up in the process... could that have something to do with this?
