How to use external display with my Macbook Pro?

I want to connect my Macbook Pro to an external monitor and use dual monitors but use the external monitor as one monitor and the Macbook display as the other... how would I do that, or does it do that automatically when you connect it to an external monitor?

  1. It’s a pretty simple thing to do. You just need to plug in your monitor, and the display will by default appear as a second desktop with nothing on it. You can adjust things like resolution, location and more in the displays section in System Preferences

  2. i went to the genus bar at my apple store when i bought the output adaptor. the guy configured it for me, if you can’t go to the apple store try online support ‘www.apple.com’ or call 1-800-MY-APPL
