Can I put an iBook G4 hard drive into a MacBook?

I have an ibook g4 and a macbook. the ibook g4 is crap because the logic board is shot so there is pretty much no use for it. is there a way to take the hard drive out of it and connect it to my macbook so that i can expand the memory on it? if so how would i go about doing that? my email is hockey_84@yahoo.com if you need any further information i'd be more than happy to give it to you.

  1. You could, but the only reasonable reason to do this is if you were trying to rescue data that is on it.

You can get a hard drive enclosure that will let you physically mount the drive within, and then connect it to your MacBook via USB or Firewire.

Here is a link to a nifty Drive Adapter, without the enclosure, for ~$23.

On that site, you will also find enclosures, if that is the way you want to go.

HOWEVER, the drive from the G4 is probably too small and slow to bother with. Adding additional hard drive space won’t help your memory situation – only adding RAM will help that. OWC (www.macsales.com) will have a good guide to what type RAM you need.

Also, that site will also help you find hard drive replacements that will work with your MacBook. I just replaced mine (from 160 GB to 500 GB) for ~$150, and it was fairly easy. There are much cheaper solutions (smaller drives – but much bigger than the G4 one) as well.

I don’t have any connection with Other World Computing, other than as a satisfied customer – but there are several other sites with similar offerings.

    Good Luck, David
