Yes and no. If it’s just downloading no you will be fine. If it’s installing, it can damage the program or operating system. It’s always advised NOT to turn off your computer when updating.
It depends what it is doing. If it was just downloading the update, then you’re fine. If it was actually applying the update (particularly if you had to restart the computer to apply the update), you may be in trouble. If the computer partially applied the update, then when you start it up again, it may look for things that aren’t there, or some files may be incompatible which could cause the laptop to crash. You can fix it with the OS X install disk, but it’s an inconvenience.
