Macbook freezes – is this a hard drive issue!?

My friend was on her mac when she opened photo booth to show someone a picture, then everything froze except for the mouse, we waited like 5 minutes then took out the battery and put it back in. On start up it froze at the apple screen with the swirling loading sign under it. After calling support they told her to take out the battery and push the power button for 10 seconds, then put the battery back in and turn it on, and right after turning it on pushing the apple ctrl p and t buttons and wait till the mac made the start up noise twice. the apple sign came up and it later switched to a circle with a dash through it, and then changed to a blinking folder with a question mark in it. After all this the woman told her to go to the apple store because it was a hard drive issue. so the question is what caused it? this is the second time it happened and both times it was completely random. And the mac wasn't hit or anything why did the hard drive break? is this a typical issue with macs

  1. Hi there. I’m sorry for your troubles. I purchased a Powerbook G4 on craigslist.org and had similar problems. The seller neglected to tell me he spilled liquid on the laptop. As a result of the undisclosed damage, the laptop crashed frequently — Well, it actually fell asleep every so often, and more & more often as time went on. The only way to restart it was to follow the procedure you described.

[I just have to tell you this...liquid damage is a killer. There was mold growing on my motherboard. Lovely.]

Since I had the Apple Care insurance package, a technician was able to walk me through the steps to reboot successfully. If you have the original computer/program CDs, you are in luck. That is the only way to fix the hard drive without visiting an Apple Store.

Also, please visit the sites below. They are useful links for the problems you are experiencing.

  2. I am guessing that it was not a hard-drive issue, but rather a software issue that went south. Laptops are more prone to hard-drive problems because of the very tiny size of the drives, but also that they get bumped around while the hard-drive is spinning.
