Why is my MacBook Pro start-up so s-l-o-w?

After I turn on my MacBook Pro and login in,it takes about 5 minutes before I can access the desktop. Then, when I am finished and go to shutdown, it takes another 5 minutes to shut down. What can I do to fix this? This also just happened recently.
Take it in to your local apple store. They are very friendly and knowledgeable, and if anyone can fix it, they can.
