I was using my 2 year old 17" Macbook Pro the day before and it would not start up the next day. I can hear it turn on and the sleep light turns on, too. But that's about it. The screen stays black. If it turns out that i have to repair the logic board, how much will that cost?

Apple Store for the correct answer.
Visit ‘http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/’ and find a service center in your area. Then call them and get a quote. Different places may have different labor charges, so its hard to say exactly what you’ll have to pay.
If could just be a hard drive issue. Any chance you can get enough life out of it to get the restore discs in? If so, then power up and hold down C. That will boot up off the disc not the hard drive. Then you can run the utilities options and see if you can fix anything.
Or boot up and hold down D. See if you can access the hardware test feature of the Mac. If you can’t even access that, then yah maybe its time to get it serviced professionally.
