Macbook won't recognize keyboard – how to fix?

I have been very pleased with my Macbook thus far... I have recorded several dozen songs & printed some books from my pix... but now when my machine boots up (and sometimes it doesn't... you just hear the boot sound over & over) I get the login screen, but I can't move the mouse or hit any button at all that will be recognized, other than the power on/off. The battery also got drained inexplicably yesterday... any ideas?
