How to fix MacBook’s keyboard shortcuts?

ok, so i don't know how this happened, but it is annoying. i press the volume down, or volume up or mute, or any of those f1 f2 f3 etc keys, and it doesn't work. i press the volume down button and it gets rid of the window. i press the mute button and it shows all windows. it is just annoying, and i don't know how to fix it. anyone have a clue how to fix this?

  1. system preferences, keyboard, un-check (dont have it ticked) "use all f1,f2 etc keys as the standard function keys"

if you want to use your f1 keys etc hold down the fn key on your macbook and then hit the f keys
