How to recover data from a damaged MacBook hard drive?

I have a 2008 MacBook that has a damaged hard drive. When I boot it up it takes a long time to load or it comes up with disc errors. The laptop has other physical damage so the keyboard does not respond so I cannot login to simply copy data to an external hard drive. I tried connecting a USB keyboard to the laptop but that does not get a response either.
Is it possible to remove the hard drive and put it in an enclosure and then connect to it as an external drive to another Mac? I am not concerned with the physical condition of this laptop as it is already badly damaged. I just want to get out pics, music, docs, etc. Any help or suggestions would be great.
It is running OS X 10.4
