Can I recover data from an iMac HD with new MacBook Pro?

The logic board in my iMac G5 died about two months ago but the hard drive is still fine. I bought a MacBook Pro about a month ago and I'm wondering if it's possible to put the hard drive from my old iMac into my new laptop to recover all of the data on it.
Can Mac use the USB ports? If so get an external drive case, jumper the drive to slave, put it in the case and then plug it into the usb port. It should be recognized.
