How to stop MacBook sleep mode?

Is there any way I can change the settings on my new laptop so the computer won't go into sleep mode when I shut it? I like to stay signed into my messenger all the time but when I shut my computer it sleeps and signs me off of everything.

  1. Of course you can, and Apple even gives you instructions if you have an external display on how to do it, since on more recent models, the heat is exchanged less from the top than on earlier models…

    You can use this utility:

Or, if you have an external monitor, read here:

  2. Nope.

When you close the lid, some of the cooling is blocked. If the machine were to NOT go to sleep when you shut the lid, it would overheat.

I recommend downloading AdiumX. It’s free. Through that, you can bring YM, AIM, iChat, MSM, etc all into one chat window, and it automatically signs you back in when the machine wakes up.
